Natural incense: resin, wood and botanical blends explained

How traditional incense is made, what a 'natural' label does and does not guarantee, and ventilation.

Methodology

Sourcing interviews and a review of ingredient declarations.

What we evaluated

  • Resins
  • Powdered woods
  • Botanical blends

Criteria

  • Ingredient disclosure
  • Binder type
  • Burn consistency
  • Smoke volume

Findings

  • 'Natural' is not a regulated term on incense packaging.
  • Undisclosed fragrance oils are common even in artisan products.

Limitations

We do not measure particulate output. Any indoor burning affects air quality.

Recommendation

Buy only where every ingredient is named, and ventilate the room.

Earth-On sells some of the products discussed here. We do not accept payment for coverage or placement.
